I'm a Nikon man. I like Canon, they make great cameras but I'd find it duiifcflt to place them ahead of Nikon. For the sake of argument here, I'll call them equal.Understand that more money is spent on lenses than the camera itself. If your father has 5 good lenses, then I don't know why you wouldn't tap into that resource assuming it will be there any time you need. I could be wrong, so do your research; I think the 60D is a manual only camera. I think it to be a fine piece of equipment with a great CCD but if you're not ready for manual settings yet, you might want to look at a different unit. Moving on. steengolf, I shoot with a 500mm(f/4). It's difficult to suggest lenses without knowing how and what you like to photograph. I work hard at getting close to the birds I photograph which helps a great deal with image quality. If you photograph small subjects like songbirds you'll want as much focal length as you can budget and using a small photo blind or camo cover can help greatly with getting closer. If you want versatility in a lens that's not too heavy the Canon 100-400L is a good choice.

I was shooting to freeze the action thus the aperture for the sake of higher shutter speed. Looking back I wished I had gone with f/7.1 or f/8 but that may have allowed some wing and foot blur.
